As we mature, we all progress through a series of developmental steps. Some of us may not progress through all the steps, may miss some pieces of a step, or even skip a step altogether. This can create holes in our abilities that prevent us from living to our true potential.
Ron Davis created the Davis Autism Approach® to fill in any gaps in these developmental steps for individuals who would otherwise be prevented from participating fully in the life of their choosing.
We all have some “holes” in our abilities, so anyone can benefit from a program; but sometimes the missing pieces show up in the form of symptoms that interfere significantly with day-to-day life, such as a weak sense of self, trouble coping with change, difficulty predicting cause/effect, sensory overload, social anxiety, and more.
Filling in the missing pieces in a systematic way causes the symptoms to begin to fall away, and natural growth occurs in those weaker areas. No longer hindered by gaps in understanding or ability, the individual is then equipped to choose the life they want for themselves and live it to the fullest.
For someone to reach their full potential, three stages need to be completed:
Individuation
Identity Development
Social Integration
The Davis approach is gentle and respectful of each client's identity, while providing the scaffolding necessary to allow neurodiverse clients to participate fully in the life of their choosing. The individuation stage gives the client the ability to come into the "here and now" at will, and strengthen the sense of "self" as an individual.
Using the Davis focusing techniques -and modeling clay- clients are able to make sense of the world, and get clarity on abstract concepts like change, cause, effect, time, sequence, and order. Concepts are made alive with modeling clay, and then the client explores real-life examples until ready to build the next concept. In this Identity development stage, a Davis program makes the world feel like a more predictable place - allowing the client to reduce anxiety, set goals and reach them!
In the Social Integration stage, the life concepts and self-regulation tools learned are tied together and applied to theory of mind in relationships, behaviours, decision-making, and learning responsibility. Practical application is made in the client's home environment and beyond - to solidify real-life application of all the life concepts.
